Winter work

Restoration work never ceases- it can rain down buckets, snow for days, barely reach above freezing for weeks and have no sign of sun under a thick blanket of fog...and the work goes on. This is the best time of year for planting native trees and shrubs- they are dormant and less sensitive in the winter, plus there is plenty of water in the natural system, so we don't have to worry about dessication.
Saturday was spent working with 55 volunteers planting trees and shrubs at Union Slough wetlands restoration site just north of Everett. This is the large tidal estuary you can see from I-5 southbound just after passing through Marysville. People For Puget Sound, through our Sound Stewards Program, has been stewarding this site since 2007. It's pretty cool to be involved in such a unique, visible site!

Volunteers haul a large log up from the marsh to use in a Douglas fir rescue operation.

This was a dynamic group of volunteers from the Monroe High School Environmental Club.

Just how do we keep all these volunteers so motivated? We provide only the most delectable treats...like apple cider mix! There was hot water to add to the mix, but the kid was just jonesing for straight up cider powder...go figure...

What's it take to keep all this going? A lot of shovels, and plants, and one tough, little kickass car! (not to mention getting a nice promotion last summer to Restoration Ecologist!)

Snow blanket

(Moffitt chekcing out the snow in the courtyard)

Edmonds, and most of Puget Sound, is under a thick blanket of snow. Two days of winter storms and now a beautiful, sunny and frigid cold day is keeping the white stuff around a lot longer than would usually happen. Robin, Amy and I took the opportunity to slip around in downtown Edmonds for a couple of hours yesterday. I often forget just how close to the water we are- just a 15 min walk from the front door to Brackett's Landing and the Edmonds-Kingston ferry terminal...

Brackett's Landing- white to the water's edge

Hanging out in Rory's- warming ourselves with the firepit and beers before the trek home. We actually finished off the evening walking through downtown for the third Thursday art walk.

Bestest roommate

This is Robin. She rocks. It's been a long while since I've had a room mate. Past roommates have all been fun, wonderful people too (much loves to my Nesser-T ladyhead), but there's something really special about Robin. Perhaps it's that we finish each others sentences, or challenge each other and cheat together on our special dietary needs (wheat free is tough to do, esp around Christmas), or that we will both open our mouths at the exact same moment to express the exact same distress or crude comment about some really lame tv show we both get sucked into, but don't really want to watch, but keep watching anyway....ahhhhh, make the vicious cycle stop!!!

She loves my kitties and they love her...and her super cooshy bed. She is the best surrogate kitty cuddler that there is. She lets Moffitt sleep on her feet and lets Wicket chew on her head. She doesn't mind the fact that Wicket has a serious drooling problem and Moffitt tries to eat everything off your plate either.

She has a rockin wardrobe that pretty much fits me too, and she helps me dress up to go shake it with the boys. Only the bestest roommate will stand outside the dressing room door and patiently assist your non-existent fashion sense while you, barely willing and with much whining, force yourself to try on everything in the store until you get something right.

We drink copious amounts of red wine and kajmir together. Tell tales of heartbreak and replenishment. Laugh til we cry and cry til we laugh. Make each other dinner. We share the chores, the leftovers and the cool linen skirt with the green and blue exploded paisleys.

Robin- I LOVES YOU! You really are the greatest and I'm super happy we found this sweet little spot to call home together!!!

ps- the microwave needs to be cleaned...
